In the spring of 1989, moviegoers met a struggling Iowa farmer who felt strangely compelled to plow under part of his cornfield to create a baseball diamond. A voice told him, “If you build it, he will come,” and while the farmer didn’t know who would come, nor did he suspect what would happen next, he inexplicably trusted the voice of his knowing. Perhaps because not trusting wasn’t the person he wanted to be. So he built his Field of Dreams.
To follow a dream can feel very risky. When we show up to give what we have to offer the world, we can never be sure who will receive it. The ‘insecurity’ of not knowing is unsettling. Yet a powerful impulse to follow the inner voice, to risk offering something we sense is our work to do, is now motivating increasing numbers of us across the planet.
Whatever you feel deeply inspired to do, to create, to share, the very act of heeding ‘the whisper’ has magic and power in it.
Thirty years ago, Kevin Costner, who played the visionary farmer in that movie, predicted it would be “this generation’s It’s a Wonderful Life.” On some level, the pull to forgo what seems ‘safe’ and expected, to follow our hearts and act on behalf of more than just our own self-interest is actually a deep instinct. Perhaps Field of Dreams was so beloved because it reminds us of our innate innocence, wonder, and unshakable connection that most of us have learned to forget in order to 'fit in' to a culture that disregards these notions as childish.
Earlier this week, while knee deep in my work of building the Wisdom Circle, a big ‘field of dreams’ that I’m offering this spring, I was comforted to remember that I can’t predict or control who will heed the call to come. My job is to cultivate 'a field' where the creative, tender, and beautiful parts of us are supported to risk coming out to play.
The Wisdom Circle is a field for re-membering who we truly are. It’s a field in which you can relax and 'live into' the big questions in your own life, so the truth of your life can become the answer. It’s an upwelling of support and inspiration for you to serve the whole by being your whole self, and building and sharing your own ‘field of dreams’—whatever that may be.
Like that idealistic farmer, my role is to build the field. The magic happens when all the players show up and the ‘game’ begins. If you sense the Wisdom Circle is your place to be, I invite you to follow the whisper and join me there.
